Sam Grabelle featured last Tuesday at The Spoken Word Poetry Series in Providence, RI. So what!! (As fans are want to shout at her.) Doing favorites like What Is It That I Hate About Poets, Sam read to an enrapt audience. A poem about the Spoken Word was coupled with a story about a poet who had related one of his best poetry experiences as getting a positive reaction from Sam for one of his poems. This made Sam all warm inside.
Sam read both new and old pieces. Angel in the Snow was an old poem she returned to, explaining how sometimes you think you're going to feel the same way forever, then you look back at your poems and realize things have changed. She read a poem about her father, entitled fittingly Dad For Now, that demonstrates how the people in her life have changed.
Her performance elicited sighs, hmms, and giggles. The poems, although short, were by no means simple. Her words were personal and poignant. She read about her family, especially her nephew, substitute motherhood, nostalgia, and wonder - all with a soft sense of humor. As she stated, her poetry was all about "getting naked".
